  Long ago there was a chess master named Qiu whose chess skills were superlative.

  Qiu had two students who studied chess with him, one student studied with concentrated focus and energy. The other, however, wasn’t like that, he thought studying chess was very easy, and there was no need to take it seriously. When the teacher was explaining, although the [the student] sat there, his eyes seemed to be on the chess pieces, he was actually thinking: “If I go to the countryside right now and shoot a goose, I’ll have a lovely dinner.” Because he was always indulging in flights of fancy and absent-mindedness, nothing the teacher said ever sunk in.

  As a result, although the two students studied were taught at the same time by the same master, one improved quickly and became a superior chess player, while the other never learned much at all.

  从前有一个下棋能手名叫秋,他的棋艺非常高超。

  During the Warring States Period, there was a man named Meng Ke [Mencius], who everyone called MengZi. Menzi was very good at creating analogies to foster discussion.

  At that time, there was a person who criticized Mencius for not trying harder to help the King of Qi. Mencius explained plainly, saying, “Take this as an example: there are some plants that live well on this earth [lit: under heaven], but if you take them and put them in the sun to dry for ten days, then you take them and put them in the gloom and cold to freeze for ten days, even if their vitality is strong they’re still going to die. My opportunities to see the King of Qi have been less and less, so even if I gave him some good influence and help, as soon as I leave, some people that don’t advocate the same things I do will influence him negatively. [That being the case,] how can I improve the quality of the King of Qi’s thinking?”

  战国时,有个叫孟轲的人,大家称他为孟子。孟子善于通过打比方来发表议论。

  During the Spring and Autumn period, Nobleman ZhiBo of the Jin state eliminated the Fan clan [in battle]. There was a person who sought to take advantage of the defeated [and thus absent] Fan clan to steal some things from their house, and he saw that in their yard dangled a large bell. The bell was molded from the finest bronze, its shape and design were very fine indeed. The thief was extremely happy, thinking to take this refined bell and carry it back to his own house. But the bell was both big and heavy, and howsoever he tried, he couldn’t move it. He thought and thought, and came up with just one solution, which was to break the bell to bits, then take the pieces separately back to his house.

  The thief found a sledgehammer, and swung at the bell with all his might. A loud “gong” sound rang out, startling the thief. The thief panicked, thinking this [enterprise] was spoiled, thinking “that kind of noise is tantamount to telling people that I’m here stealing the bell, isn’t it?” He was worried, and he flung is body at the bell, stretching his arms around it to try to still the sound, but really how could he stop it? The sound went on and on, ringing far and wide.

  The longer he heard it, the more afraid he became, and withdrew his hands to press them against his ears with all his strength. “Yi, the sound has lessened, I can’t hear it anymore!” The thief became happy again, “How wonderful! If I cover my ears well, the sound can’t be heard!” covered his ears well, he couldn’t hear the sound at all! He immediately found two pieces of cloth and stopped up his ears, thinking that this way, no one else could hear the bell’s sound either. So he began smashing the bell, hitting it again and again, the ringing of the bell being heard even in far away places. People heard the bells sounds and came in great numbers, catching the thief.

  春秋时侯,晋国贵族智伯灭掉了范氏。有人趁机跑到范氏家里想偷点东西,看见院子里吊着一口大钟。钟是用上等青铜铸成的,造型和图案都很精美。小偷心里高兴极了,想把这口精美的大钟背回自已家去。可是钟又大又重,怎么也挪不动。他想来想去,只有一个办法,那就是把钟敲碎,然后再分别搬回家。

  小偷找来一把大大锤,拼命朝钟砸去,咣的.一声巨响,把他吓了一大跳。小偷着慌,心想这下糟了,这种声不就等于是告诉人们我正在这里偷钟吗?他心里一急,身子一下子扑到了钟上,张开双臂想捂住钟声,可钟声又怎么捂得住呢!钟声依然悠悠地传向远方。

  他越听越害怕,不同自由地抽回双手,使劲捂住自已的耳朵。“咦,钟声变小了,听不见了!”小偷高兴起来,“妙极了!把耳朵捂住不住就听不进钟声了吗!”他立刻找来两个布团,把耳朵塞住,心想,这下谁也听不见钟声了。于是就放手砸起钟来,一下一下,钟声响亮地传到很远的地方。人们听到钟声蜂拥而至把小偷捉住了。

  The bulging belly fox

  A hungry Fox found in a hollow tree a quantity of bread and meat, which some shepherds had placed there against their return. Delighted with his find he slipped in through the narrow aperture and greedily devoured it all. But when he tried to get out again he found himself so swollen after his big meal that he could not squeeze through the hole, and fell to whining and groaning over his misfortune. Another Fox, happening to pass that way, came and asked him what the matter was; and, on learning the state of the case, said, “Well, my friend, I see nothing for it but for you to stay where you are till you shrink to your former size; you’ll get out then easily enough.”

  胀肚的狐狸

  there is a story in "Hanshu" telling of a rich man, who being a lover of s and hada large collection.Among them was a rare vase made of jade. The vase of exquisiteworkmanship and of historical value and he loved it dearly. One night he noticed amouse passing near the precious vase. The mouse jumped into the vase and wastrying to eat some food which the man had carelessly left there. The sighinfuriated the man and in a fit of rage he threw a stone at the mouse. For sure,the mouse was killed, but the precious vase was broken also. The loss of the vase pained the man GREatly and he deeply regretted his own thoughtlessness, which bought him this unrecoverable loss. He now realized that any one, who cares forthe present and overlooks consequences is apt to bring disasters upon himself. Sohe exclaimed to warn people by saying do not burn you house to get rid of a mouse.

  Very Pleased to Meet You

  During World War II, a lot of young women in Britain were in the army. Joan Phillips was one of them. She worked in a big camp, and of course met a lot of men, officers and soldiers.

  One evening she met Captain Humphreys at a dance. He said to her, "I‘m going abroad tomorrow, but I‘d be very happy if we could write to each other." Joan agreed, and they wrote for several months.

  Then his letters stopped, but she received one from another officer, telling her that he had been wounded and was in a certain army hospital in England.

  Joan went there and said to the matron, "I‘ve come to visit Captain Humphreys."

  "Only relatives are allowed to visit patients here," the matron said.

  "Oh, that‘s all right," answered Joan. "I‘m his sister."

  "I‘m very pleased to meet you," the matron said, "I‘m his mother!"

  here was, a man who came to the palace of the State of Chu and gave the guard a kind of medicine for immortality to be presented to the king.

  有一个人来到楚国王宫,把一种长生不死的药交给守卫官,请他敬献给国王。

  As the guard held the medicine in both hands and walked towards the inner palace, he met an archer of the bodyguard. The archer asked him:

  守卫官捧着药朝内宫走去,迎面碰上卫队的.一个弓箭手。弓箭手问他:

  "Is what you hold in hands edible?"

  “你手里捧的东西,人可以吃吗?”

  The guard answered:

  守卫官回答:

  "Of course, it is."

  “人可以吃。”

  Upon hearing this, the archer snatched the medicine, stuffed it into his mouth and swallowed it.

  弓箭手听了,一把夺过药,塞到嘴里就吞了下去。

  The King of Chu was very angry. He ordered to have the archer beheaded. The archer said:

  楚王非常生气,下令将这个弓箭手斩首。弓箭手说:

  "It is not my fault but the fault of the guard, because he told me `It is edible.' "

  “这不是我的过错,而是守卫官的过错,因为他回答我‘人可以吃。”,

  Then he continued:

  又说:

  "This is a medicine for immortal life. Now I have taken it, but I am going to be killed by Your Majesty. Then, the so-called medicine for immortal life will become `a medicine hastening death', won't it? The man who presented this medicine was trying to deceive Your Majesty."

  “这是不死之药,现在我吃了,反而要被大王处死;那么,这不死之药,不就成了‘催死之药’了吗?这是献药的人在欺骗大王呀!”

  Finally he said:

  最后说:

  "If today Your Majesty should kill me, an innocent man, then people would say: `The King would rather be deceived than believe his own bodyguard.'"

  “今天,如果大王杀了我这个无罪的人,那么众人就会说:‘大王宁愿被人欺骗,也不愿意相信自己的卫士。”

  While the King of Chu heard this, he felt that there was something in what the archer said, so he let him go.

  楚王听了,觉得这些话有点道理,就把弓箭手放了。

  Father's Things

  When Peter is 17, he is as tall as his father. So he begins to borrow his father's clothes when he wants to go out with his father's clothes when he wants to go out with his friends in the evening. Father doesn't like this. And he always gets very angry when he finds his son wearing any of his things.

  One evening when Peter is about to go out; his father stops him in the living room. He looks at Peter's clothes very carefully. Then he says angrily, "Isn't that one of my ties, Peter?"

  "Yes, Father, it is," answers Peter.

  "And that shirt is mine, too."

  "Yes, that's your, too." answers Peter.

  "And you're wearing my belt!"

  "Yes, I am, Father," answers Peter, "You don't want to your trousers to fall down, do you?"

  父亲的东西

  皮特17岁的时候,长得和父亲一样高了。于是,当他晚上和朋友一起出去时,就开始借父亲的衣服穿。可是这位父亲可不喜欢这样,当他发现他的儿子穿他的衣服时,总是非常生气。

  一天晚上,皮特准备出去,父亲在客厅里拦住了他。父亲细细打量着皮特的穿着。然后气呼呼的说着;"皮特,那不是我的领带吗?"

  皮特回答说:"是的,父亲,是您的领带。"

  "还有那衬衫也是我的。"

  "是的',衬衫也是您的。"皮特回答说。

  "还有呢,你连皮带也用我的。"父亲说。

  "是的,父亲,"皮特回答说,"您不愿意让您的裤子掉下来吧?"
