As traffic problems become more and more serious in many cities of developed and developing countries, their governments have to try hard and loads of money and energy have been spent to deal with them. Firstly, it is not efficient for the commuters to use their private cars to and back from their workplaces. Occasionally we can see they have to sit on the wheels wasting time and fuel in a heavy traffic jam. At the same time, through burning the fossil fuels, green house gas CO2, CO1, acid rain gas SO2, fumes and dusts are being released into the atmosphere, all of which heavily overload the environment. Thirdly, with the increase of private cars, the road traffic accidents

are also rise dramatically. For example, in a city with 5000 cars, there will be at least 250 accidents happening everyday, which also burden the public healthy services.

On the contrary, expected public traffic may be an ideal solution to these problems. For example city buses and railways are widely used or being constructed by many cities. People can take buses easily, which can be found every 10 minutes or less in the peak time. Actually, Nottingham Transport Company is building its own light railway in the city, which is announced by the speak man of the company, “It will be completed in the next year, the tickets will be very competitive and at the same time the travel will be very safe and comfortable.”

On the other hand, public traffic had its own disadvantages. Usually it cannot provide door-to-door service. It is inconvenient to go shopping by public vehicles. Sometimes you must wait a long time for the train. And quite a lot of people prefer to enjoy driving. In conclusion, developing the public traffic is a useful approach to deal with these difficulties. One possible way, if not the best, is to taxi private cars heavily and use these revenues to provide citizens cheaper public traffic services.

The development of children depends on many factors, including parents, school education, media, peers and so forth. personally, I agree that the family is less influential than other aspects working together, and my reasons would be explored as below.

Admittedly, the influence of family on children is very deep, because parents, primary teachers in the life of children, set the first role models for them to learn and imitate, and which would be logged into the impressionable childhood mind and determine basic behaviors and thinking of them. For example, by observing and learning the daily activities of parents, like speaking, cooking and house cleaning, washing hands before eating, a child can master the language, self-care ability and hygienic habits. Besides, parents also play a key role in developing the intelligence of children. For instance, with day-to-day teaching, communication and storytelling, a parent can help a child to improve cognitive skills like basic mathematic calculation, memorizing, reading, and thinking and judging in a proper way.

However, I strongly believe outside-of-home elements make greater contributions to the overall growth of children. Firstly, in terms of academic education, teachers in school have priority over parents. For example, compared with some parent who have low-level or even no education, teachers are professionally educated and trained in formal university, and well-experienced in teaching. That is to say, school teachers are more advantageous and influential, in terms of comprehensively and accurately instructing, explaining and demonstrating common knowledge about laws of nature and universe, theories and formulas of math and physics, and events and people in history. What is more, forming social skills also relies on a school environment where children have opportunities to communicate, play and argue with other peers. This strong interpersonal interaction can make children proficient in real-world socialization.

Besides, mass media is another external factor affecting children’s development. For example, violent video on the Internet, TV programs and computer games are very likely to twist social values of the young audience, because children, unlike adults, are lack of abilities to distinguish right from wrong. Therefore, with long-term exposure to ill information, children would be rude, aggressive and self eccentric. As a result, they, more often than not, consider violence as the main or even only way to solve problems, thereby leading to school bullying.

In conclusion, when it comes to the importance in influencing children, other aspects like teachers in school and media override the parents, for the reasons that the formers have incomparable effects on the education, social skills and personalities of children.

It is true that many older people believe in traditional values that often seem incompatible with the needs of younger people. While I agree that some traditional ideas are outdated, I believe that others are still useful and should not be forgotten.

On the one hand, many of the ideas that elderly people have about life are becoming less relevant for younger people. In the past, for example, people were advised to learn a profession and find a secure job for life, but today’s workers expect much more variety and diversity from their careers. At the same time, the ‘rules’ around relationships are being eroded as young adults make their own choices about who and when to marry. But perhaps the greatest disparity between the generations can be seen in their attitudes towards gender roles. The traditional roles of men and women, as breadwinners and housewives, are no longer accepted as necessary or appropriate by most younger people.

On the other hand, some traditional views and values are certainly applicable to the modern world. For example, older generations attach great importance to working hard, doing one’s best, and taking pride in one’s work, and these behaviours can surely benefit young people as they enter today’s competitive job market. Other characteristics that are perhaps seen as traditional are politeness and good manners. In our globalised world, young adults can expect to come into contact with people from a huge variety of backgrounds, and it is more important than ever to treat others with respect. Finally, I believe that young people would lead happier lives if they had a more ‘old-fashioned’ sense of community and neighbourliness.

In conclusion, although the views of older people may sometimes seem unhelpful in today’s world, we should not dismiss all traditional ideas as irrelevant.

Businesses have always sought to make a profit, but it is becoming increasingly common to hear people talk about the social obligations that companies have. I completely agree with the idea that businesses should do more for society than simply make money.

On the one hand, I accept that businesses must make money in order to survive in a competitive world. It seems logical that the priority of any company should be to cover its running costs, such as employees’ wages and payments for buildings and utilities. On top of these costs, companies also need to invest in improvements and innovations if they wish to remain successful. If a company is unable to pay its bills or meet the changing needs of customers, any concerns about social responsibilities become irrelevant. In other words, a company can only make a positive contribution to society if it is in good financial health.

On the other hand, companies should not be run with the sole aim of maximising profit; they have a wider role to play in society. One social obligation that owners and managers have is to treat their employees well, rather than exploiting them. For example, they could pay a “living wage” to ensure that workers have a good quality of life. I also like the idea that businesses could use a proportion of their profits to support local charities, environmental projects or education initiatives. Finally, instead of trying to minimise their tax payments by using accounting loopholes, I believe that company bosses should be happy to contribute to society through the tax system.

In conclusion, I believe that companies should place as much importance on their social responsibilities as they do on their financial objectives.

Poverty reduction is again a hot topic worldwide when the economic crisis hits the poorest counties hardest. While more attention drawn to this issue, some problems emerge with people’s opinions divided. Many people believe countries have a moral obligation to help each other, whilst others argue that aid money is, more often than not, misspent by the recipients, so foreign aids, as a well-intended mechanism, simply failed and need to be scrapped.

As a more widely shared knowledge than ever, poverty in the third world is an inevitable cause of all the chaos afflicting the world, from crimes, regional confrontations to terrorism, even pandemics. On this more and more globalized world, a nation could no longer be exempt from the unstableness and misery suffered by its neighbouring countries. Even the cry from the faraway end of the globe will be brought to your ears through all the links and ties. It is, therefore, a consensus among both the rich and the poor that only when poverty is eliminated once and for all, can peace and prosperity be attained and sustained. To this common end, the only possible way is to engage rich countries in helping poor ones generously and unconditionally.

Sure enough, there are some high-profile scandals of fund misuse. It’s also true foreign aid did foster corruption and irresponsible policymaking in some countries. Yet, this should not serve as the excuse of withdrawing these most needed aids which are supposed to and also proved to save lives and deliver hopes. A loose governance or corruptive government cannot cancel off the desperate needs of its people. On the other hand, there are some effective measures can be taken to avoid, at least to some extent, such undesirable situations, for instance, strengthening the supervision of fund disbursement, delivering aids through the network of non-governmental organizations, or helping to promote recipient counties’ governance and management.

In other words, the abuses involved with foreign aids can be checked through other available means rather than just abandoning the whole package altogether. As I mentioned above, there is hardly any way more effective than international aids in fighting world hunger and its tragic consequences. On no accounts would we give up on our shared dream of creating a planet free from tears and bleeding. So let’s work together to hold the rich countries accountable in this tough battle.

Task:Advertising discourages us from being different individuals by making them want to be or to look the same. Do you agree or disagree?

  Sample answer:

It is said that advertising is so influential that it persuade people to become similar with each other. I believe this statement is a bit overstated.

First of all, it is unfair to blame advertisements for the popularity of some certain products amongst consumers. For example, using iPhone and other electric devices has become increasingly popular throughout the world, especially in China. What are the reasons? I think it is because of its good selling points and designs instead of the commercials. While some mightcounter that some target consumers are vulnerable, such as children and teenagers, and they might be persuaded to purchase similar items, I believe it seldom happens since these days young people are longing for distinctive appearance and individuality.

Secondly, it is truly less likely for consumers to make similar choices with the help of commercials. By viewing a variety of advertisements broadcasted on TV or billboard, people are informed of different choices in terms of prices, designs and patterns. They might fine-tunetheir demand first, comparing the products available on the market, and making wise decisions that satisfy themselves in the end. By contrast, without the advertisement, consumers have no access to discover their real needs and find the better choice, which might lead to uniformity in purchasing decisions.

In conclusion, it is the quality of goods rather than their advertisements that attracts consumers. As there are so many kinds of commercials, customers have a wide range of selections, making them become different rather than identical.

In modern society, many companies attach great importance to how employees dress at work, while others consider that work efficiency is far more important than employees' appearance. In my opinion, the smart dressing style of workers plays a crucial role, but the quality of work should be prioritized.

People who favour the importance of dressing argue that dressing well can bring many benefits to the company and individual. First of all, appropriate workplace clothing can demonstrate a high level of professionalism, which is best illustrated by bank employees wearing formal attire and salespeople wearing business suit. In addition, an exquisite outlook creates a positive attitude which aids employees in building social networks and developing business. A recent survey in China reveals that wearing a formal suit will impress potential clients that you are working at a trustworthy company, whereas casual outfits typically wind up with an opposite effect.

However, the success and reputation of enterprises mainly depend on the quality of work. Firstly, product quality is a necessary factor to ensure customer satisfaction. Therefore, the high requirements for quality work generate higher profits and enhance market competitiveness. What is more, the dress code for employees is dropping with technology innovation and job diversification. In the workplace where projects and tasks are done online, employees only focus on their capacity and productivity instead of outward look. Companies like Apple and Google, for example, are so tolerant of dress code that employees feel free to excel in their work.

In conclusion, if an enterprise demands for long-term and sustainable development, the quality of work always comes first. While employees need to be cautious about the way they dress to work, it is the quality of work that they should value most.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

  Write at least 150 words

  Sample Answer

The pie charts illustrate the primary reasons that people came to and left the UK in 20xx.

At first glance it is clear that the main factor influencing this decision was a definite job

accounted for 30 per cent of immigration to the UK, and this figure was very similar for emigration, at 29%. A large number of people, 22%, also emigrated because they were looking for a job, though the proportion of people leaving the UK for this purpose was noticeably lower at less than a fifth. Another major factor influencing a move to the UK was for formal study, with over a quarter of people immigrating for this reason. However, interestingly, only a small minority, 4%, left for this.

The proportions of those moving to join a family member were quite similar for immigration and emigration, at 15% and 13% respectively. Although a significant number of people (32%) gave ‘other’ reasons or did not give a reason why they emigrated, this accounted for only 17% with regards to immigration.

Explain some of the ways in which humans are damagingthe environment. What can governments do to addressthese problems? What can individual people do?

Humans are responsible for a variety of environmental problems, but we can also take steps to reduce the damage that we are causing to the planet. This essay will discuss environmental problems and the measures that governments and individuals can take to address these problems.

Two of the biggest threats to the environment are air pollution and waste. Gas emissions from factories and exhaust fumes from vehicles lead to global warming, which may have a devastating effect on the planet in the future. As the human population increases, we are also producing ever greater quantities of waste, which contaminates the earth and pollutes rivers and oceans.

Governments could certainly make more effort to reduce air pollution. They could introduce laws to limit emissions from factories or to force companies to use renewable energy from solar, wind or water power. They could also impose 'green taxes' on drivers and airline companies. In this way, people would be encouraged to use public transport and to take fewer flights abroad, therefore reducing emissions.

Individuals should also take responsibility for the impact they have on the environment. They can take public transport rather than driving, choose products with less packaging, and recycle as much as possible. Most supermarkets now provide reusable bags for shoppers as well as 'banks' for recycling glass, plastic and paper in their car parks. By reusing and recycling, we can help to reduce waste.

In conclusion, both national governments and individuals must play their part in looking after the environment.

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. Write a report for a university

lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.

In this analysis we will examine three pie charts. The first one is headed ‘World Spending.’ The second is ‘World Population’ and the third is ‘Consumption of Resources.’

In the first chart we can see that people spend most of their income (24%) on food. In some countries this percentage would obviously be much higher. Transport and then housing are the next major expenses at 18% and 12% respectively. Only 6% of income is spent on clothing.

In the second chart entitled ‘World Population’, it is not surprising to find that 57% of people live in Asia. In fact China and India are two of the most populated countries in the world and they are both situated on this continent. Europe and the Americans account for nearly 30% of the total, whilst 10% of people live in Africa.

Finally, the third chart reveals that the USA and Europe consume a huge 60% of the world’s resource.

To sum up, the major expenditure is on food, the population figures are the highest for Asia and the major consumers are the USA and Europe.

The two graphs show that oil was the major energy source in the USA in both 1980 and 1990.

It is manifest from the pie charts that coal, natural gas and hydroelectric power remained in much the same proportions. On the other hand, there was a dramatic rise in nuclear power, which doubled its percentage over the ten years.

Oil supplied the largest percentage of energy, although the percentage decreased from 42% in 1980 to 33% in 1990. Coal in 1990 was the second largest source of energy, increasing its proportion to 27% from 22% in the previous decade. Natural gas, the second largest source in 1980 at 26%, decreased its share very slightly to provide 25% of America’s energy ten years later. There was no change in the percentage supplied by hydroelectric power which remained at 5% of the total energy used. Nuclear power the greatest change: in 1990 it was 10%, twice that of the 1980s.

The prosperity of the media has brought the omnipresence of media celebrities and sports stars, which also earns them a cult following, particularly young people. From my perspective, I tend to believe it does harm to adolescents when the worship is blind, especially when celebrities can hardly set a good example.

Admittedly, star worship can provide a certain extent of spiritual comfort for the young generation, since the majority of them consider following idols as a way of alleviating stress from daily busy routines. In addition, emulating celebrities, especially those media stars and sports stars who have outstanding qualities, including diligence and persistence, can also motivate younger fans to spare no efforts in pursuing their own dreams. It is this kind of spiritual belief that inspires and encourages the ordinary fans to reach the peaks of their fields, benchmarking themselves against the shining models.

However, over-adoration sometimes may exert negative influences on the youth considering its overwhelming impacts. For one thing, immature and impulsive young fans are extremely likely to excessively focus on the private life of celebrities. Instead of being influenced by the shining points of their career, young fans are more easily obsessed with the unattainable lifestyle of considerable luxury, which is detrimental to the formation of sound values during their formative years. For another, undesirable impacts may even be aggravated when idols are involved in negative scandals or show poor performance in the public, given that young people, without proper judgement of right and wrong, may imitate what some entertainment stars or top athletes do, irrespective of violation to the social order or addiction to alcohol and drugs. In the long run, blindly following suit as celebrities, without critical and independent thinking, will lead to adverse social conduct.

In conclusion, in my opinion, the misleading effects on young followers cannot be ignored when we consider some misbehaviors of celebrities. Adequate guidance should be guaranteed for the young audience to ensure they can truly distinguish the good traits which deserve to be emulated.

People have different views about how much choice students should have with regard to what they can study at university. While some argue that it would be better for students to be forced into certain key subject areas, I believe that everyone should be able to study the course of their choice.

There are various reasons why people believe that universities should only offer subjects that will be useful in the future. They may assert that university courses like medicine, engineering and information technology are more likely to be beneficial than certain art degrees. From a personal perspective, it can be argued that these courses provide more job opportunities, career progression, better salaries, and therefore an improved quality of life for students who take them. On the societal level, by forcing people to choose particular university subjects, governments can ensure that any knowledge and skill gaps in the economy are covered. Finally, a focus on technology in higher education could lead to new inventions, economic growth, and greater future prosperity.

In spite of these arguments, I believe that university students should be free to choose their preferred areas of study. In my opinion, society will benefit more if our students are passionate about what they are learning. Besides, nobody can really predict which areas of knowledge will be most useful to society in the future, and it may be that employers begin to value creative thinking skills above practical or technical skills. If this were the case, perhaps we would need more students of art, history and philosophy than of science or technology.

In conclusion, although it might seem sensible for universities to focus only on the most useful subjects, I personally prefer the current system in which people have the right to study whatever they like.

It is said that people are losing their enthusiasm for visiting local museums and places of historical importance. This essay will put forward explanations for this before suggesting solutions to tackling this problem.

There are many reasons why museums and historical places are not frequented by local people. The main one is that local people find paying a visit to local tourist attractions boring and a waste of time. In other words, such places would be visually unattractive and arouse little interest in locals, for the simple reason that they have been familiar with those places through school courses or personal experiences. Another significant reason is that the authorities charge a substantial amount of admission fee, giving rise to a reduction of the number of locals visiting historic sites. As a result, the destinations would be generally more appealing and worthy to the tourists than to the locals.

To encourage local residents to attend historical relics and museums, several measures can be prompted. First and foremost, authorities can change the perception of museums and historical sites by organizing cultural events and regular exhibitions, including weddings, concerts and celebrations. These renewals would provide the public with a new experience and attract media attention to historical values. Another solution is to offer free tickets and special promotions for local people at weekends. For example, the Confucian temple in China has set specific days on which free entrance is available for everyone to commemorate and honour traditional occasions. Therefore, a growing number of locals would be encouraged to come more regularly.

In conclusion, people avoid visiting museums or historical places due to their familiarity with those destinations and high entrance fees. The government can promote these sites by conducting interesting programmes and offering free or subsidised entry.
