　　Last year, my parents and I arrived in the United States on the other side of the ocean, living in Chicago, the third largest city in the United States. The city life there is very different from the city life in China.

　　Most people in China live in public housing or apartments, and there are not so many people in the United States. People usually live in semi-detached houses. The left half of the family, the right half the other family, or up and down two families, the economy many people live in the independent house. The two houses are not large, usually made of beautiful bricks, and the first floor has steps to connect the ground and houses, and the houses are numbered with metal. There was a small garden around the house, with lush trees and green grass, and some tables and chairs. There is a fence outside the garden, a password lock on the fence, someone with a key to the password can go in, so it's safe to live in it.

　　Special 2: traffic

　　Car penetration in China is lower than in the u.s., where most Chinese residents take public transportation, and almost every home in the United States has a car. Why? That's because the United States was designed as a big car in the first place. The roads are designed to be spacious and the garage is so much designed that there are few traffic jams or parking Spaces in the United States. Back in China, there are no seats left for the training courses, and the half way is still stuck on the high shelf, so it must get up early to be not late.

　　Winter in the United States, people don't have to wear thick wool pants and a sweater, because indoor central heating in the winter, go out is given priority to with the car, go out just get in the car, the car also has air conditioning, so don't feel cold. It's kind of like our northeast China.

　　You must be very fond of pizza and cookies. These are the snacks that everyone enjoys during the break. But why eat well and sometimes not to eat? That's because americans eat high-calorie foods, such as a pizza, so they eat them for dinner. Americans pay more attention to the nutrition of food, like to eat high-protein things, and also like to eat very sweet snack, so you can't burn Chinese food in the United States can only eat these things all day long!

　　Americans sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that American values are universal ones. We can't always see that our values are actually typical American values. Instead, we assume the things Americans value are obviously what everyone should believe in.

　　But we should remember the saying: when you "assume," you make an "ass" out of "u" and "me." We only need to look at what happens when Americans go as advisors to developing countries to see how wrong our assumptions can be. Some Americans go thinking they're sharing pearls of wisdom with the backward natives about how to get things done right. They assume that stimulating competition and giving financial incentives for individual achievement will naturally change people's behavior and lead to success. When their projects barely get off the ground, they can't understand what went wrong. They mistakenly think that people must just be lazy or that they don't really want a higher standard of living.

　　So the advisors wind up getting discouraged and going home, grateful to be surrounded by hardworking Americans again.

　　In these situations, we should realize that American values may come from America's unique position as the land of opportunity. We are brought up with the American dream that everyone can work hard and get ahead. But we should realize that in countries with a different history and different opportunities, other values might be more important, like avoiding conflict or saving face.

　　first of all, the disadvantages may include lack of privacy and little opportunity to be independent. they will lose the chance of living on their own. another drawback to living in an american home involves the possibility that the family may treat the student like a child. for eample, the parents may want to decide who his friends should be and where he should go during his leisure time.

　　even though there may be some disadvantages in living with an american family, the advantage far overweighs them. by taking part in a home-stay program, the student has an ecellent opportunity to learn about american customs. also, he will learn about many other aspects about american way of life, such as the way schools are run in the u nited states. and the family will no doubt make cerlain that he becomes acquainted with this new way of life, and soon he will feel at home.

　　Jazz music, developed by African-Americans in the late 1800s, allows performers to freely express their emotions and musical skill. Instead of just playing the melody, jazz musicians improvise different tunes using the same chords. The peak of jazz music came in the 1920s, known as "The Jazz Era." This period produced musicians like Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. These musicians later created the "big band" sounds of the 1930s. Different styles of jazz developed in different cities, such as New Orleans, Chicago, New York and Kansas City. Composer George Gershwin brought jazz into the world of classical music with pieces like "Rhapsody in Blue."

When they reach young adulthood, they choose their own careersand marriage partners. Of course, many young adults still seek their parents' advice andapproval for the choices they make. But once they "leave the nest" at around 18 to 21 yearsold, they want to be on their own, not "tied to their mother's apron strings."

But contrary to popular belief, most adultAmericans don't make their parents pay for room and board when they come to visit. Even asadults, they respect and honor their parents.

Some argue that attending a day care center can be apositive experience for children. Others insist that mothers are the best caregivers for children.A number of women are now leaving the work force to become full-time homemakers.

For example, "time outs" have become popular inrecent years. Children in "time out" have to sit in a corner or by a wall. They can get up onlywhen they are ready to act nicely. Older children and teenagers who break the rules may begrounded, or not allowed to go out with friends. Some of their privileges at home-like TV ortelephone use-may also be taken away for a while. Although discipline isn't fun for parents orchildren, it's a necessary part of training.

　　Being a parent is a tall order. It takes patience, love, wisdom, courage and a good sense ofhumor to raise children (and not lose your sanity). Some people are just deciding not to havechildren at all, since they're not sure it's worth it. But raising children means training the nextgeneration and preserving our culture. What could be worth more than that?
