I. Teaching aims:

1. Get the Ss to know something about first aid.

2. Get the Ss to know the importance of having knowledge of first aid.

3. Get the Ss to deal with some common injuries.

II. Teaching procedures:

1. Lead-in:

Show the Ss a picture in which a girl is cooking in the kitchen, suddenly it catches fire. Then ask the Ss the following questions:

What happened to the girl ? If you were the girl, what would you do ?

2. Brainstorming:

What words can you think of when you talk about accidents and first aid?

bleed

drowning choke

ambulance burn/ catch fire

unconscious cut

wound electrical

3. Now please turn to page 57, and look at the six pictures. Get the Ss into group discussions to know:

a. What would you do in these situations?

b. What could we do to prevent these accidents?

Possible ways:

Picture 1: Drowning

If a person has stopped breathing after falling into the water, we’d better press a hand on his chest many times, and then use the mouth- to-mouth method to start the person’s breathing again

Picture 2: Traffic accident

a. Call for a doctor or an ambulance.

b. Never pull her out of the car.

c. Find enough people to lift the car safely and take her to hospital at once

Suggestions: Look at both sides when crossing the street.

Picture 3: Burns

a. Call 119 first and tell them the exact address on the phone.

b. If someone is badly burnt, we should call 120 to ask for an ambulance.

Suggestions: Never play with fire. Be careful with gas.Make sure that all the electric wires are safe.

Picture 4: Bleeding

a. Try to stop the bleeding

b. Press a handkerchief onto the bleeding point and hold it there.

c. Hold up the part of body which is bleeding if possible.

Picture 5: Cuts

a. Go to the hospital at once.

b. Never pull it out of the cut.

c. If the cut is not serious, we can wash the area of cut, dry it and cover it with a piece of dry and clean cloth.

Picture 6: Choking

Make him /her spit by patting him/her on the back.

Suggestions: To avoid this, we shouldn’t talk or laugh when eating.

4. Get the Ss to know some DOS and DON’TS about Safety around the house.

Dos:

1. Make sure that electric wires are safe and that children can’t reach them.

2. If a pan of oil catches fire, turn off the gas and cover the pan quickly.

3. Make sure that everyone in your family knows how to call 110 and 120.

4. Learn more about first aid.

Don’ts:

1. Don’t put poisons into other containers, for example empty bottles.

2. Never leave small things a baby can put in its mouth on the floor or table.

3. Don’t play with electrical equipment.

4. Never use ladders on a wet floor.

Then ask the Ss to work in pairs to tell each other what you should do and should not do.

5. Homework:

a. Preview the passage DR ABC by reading the new words in this unit

b. Finish the exercises about the first passage in THE BEST DESIGN.
