The First Period

Teaching aims:

1. To enable students to read statistical graphs

2. To get students to know something about eating habits and agriculture

3. To improve students’ listening ability by listening and answering relative questions

Teaching important and difficult points:

1. Getting some information about the changes of eating habits

2. Getting the general idea of the given listening passage

Teaching procedures:

Step 1. Lead-in

1. What do you have for breakfast / lunch / supper?

2. What did your parents have in their childhood?

3. What are the differences between the foods you have now and your parents had in the past?

Step 2. Warming up

1. Teach the students how to read statistical graphs:

1) What is the graph about?

(Look at the words above or below the graph.

e.g. Growth of major farm products 1991-95 compared with 1986-90percentages)

2) See what is shown on the x-axis.

(Grain, Cotton, Oil, Sugar, Meat, Fish and Fruit)

3) See what is shown on the y-axis.

(10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%)

2. Read the graphs and answer:

1) Which farm product grew most during the past five years?

(Fruit.)

2) How much did it grow compared with that during the second half of the 1980s?

(82%.)

3) Which grew least?

(Grain.)

4) If three million pigs, sheep and cattle were raised during the years from 1986 to 1990, how many were raised from 1991to 1995?

(3,000,000 * 1.63 = 4,890,000)

3. Discuss:

1) How are people’s eating habits changing over the years?

Why do you think this happens?

Notes:

A. over the years: 在这几年里

B. do you think: 插入语,经常位于疑问词(组)后,有时也可以放在句尾。

e.g. Where do you think our English teacher comes from?

你认为我们英语教师来自哪里?

Who do you think the old lady is? 你认为那老太太是谁?

What is it, do you think? 你认为这是什么?

2) What effects do you think the changes in eating habits will have on agriculture or nature?

Note:

have an effect on: 对……产生影响

Step 3. Listening

1. Is all the land in China arable?

(No.)

2. What did farmers do in the past with the land which is not arable?

(They did nothing but move away.)

3. What do farmers do now with the land which is not arable?

(Plant fruit or start fish farms and so on.)

4. Listen to the tape for the first time to do Exercise 1 in listening.

5. Listen again and do Exercise 2.

6. Listen for the third time and do Exercise 3.

Homework:

1. Revise what we learned today.

2. Preview Pre-reading.

3. Preview the reading passage.

4. Do Exercise 3 on P109.
