Language points

1.a series of 表示“一系列的,一连串的;一套(丛书,邮票等)”。如:

a series of meetings 一系列的会议

television series 电视连续剧

a series of exams 一连串的考试

a series of school textbook 一套教科书

*series 是一个单复数相同的名词, “a series of +名词”作主语时,谓语要用单数形式,若“two series of+名词”做主语,谓语用复数形式。

[拓展]come across 还可以表示“想到,越过”等意。如:

⑵信仰,信奉

We believe in Marxism.我们信仰马克思主义。

⑶赞成,认为… …是好的;认为有… …

They don’t believe in kindness to criminals.他们不赞成对罪犯仁慈。

I believe in plenty of fresh air and exercise.

我认为充足的新鲜空气对锻炼身体有好处。

I believe in keeping early hours. 我赞成早睡早起。

辨析: habit 与 custom

habit 指个体的习惯、习性;custom则多指国家、民族或集体的“风俗,习惯”。

英国人在夏季全家到海边度假已蔚然成风。

I just can’t give up the habit of smoking. 我就是戒不掉吸烟的习惯。

If only 虽然是从属连词,但它引导的从句却能单独成句,而且表达完整的意思:要是… …该多好--一种不能实现或难以实现的愿望。它相当于 wish ,但语气更强。句后用句号或感叹号皆可。

⑴表示已经过去的不能实现的愿望,常含有后悔、惋惜之意。谓语动词应使用had done形式。

If only I had taken his advice! 要是我听从了他的建议就好了!

⑵表达现在不可能实现的愿望,谓语动词用一般过去时。

If only I could swim! 我要是会游泳该多好啊!

⑶表达将来难以实现的愿望,谓语动词用would/could+动词原形或一般过去时。

If only she would help me! 要是他能帮我就好了!

[注]if only除以上用法外,它还相当于if,引导条件状语从句。

If only he gets the job, it will make a great deal of difference.

辨析:if only 与 only if

if only多用语虚拟语气;only if 多用语称述语气,only修饰if, 表示唯一的条件。

10 The statue moved to the side and the door opened up. 雕像一到一旁,门开了。

open up 意为“完全打开”,其中up表示动作行为的完全结束、彻底完成。再如:

use up 用完 eat up 吃光

burn up 烧光 end up 结束

11 It is not always easy to do …,句中it 形式主语,真正的主语是不定式。

It is important to keep healthy. 保持健康是很重要的。

it is + adj. +for sb. to do 侧重说明某人做某事的动作或状态的性质、情况不涉及人的品质。

it is +adj. +of sb. to do sth. 侧重表明对某人做某时的评价,评价的侧重点是人,描述不定式的行为者的性格品质。如:kind, good, nice, wise, clever, silly, wrong, right, careless, impolite, rude, naughty 等。

=You are kind to think so much of us.
