Lesson 18

Teaching Aims :

Teaching Procedures:

Step I. Greeting

T: Hello, everyone!

Ss: Hello, teacher.

T: Sit down, please, is every body here?

S1: Li Ming is absent, He is ill,

T: I' m sorry to hear that, I hope he will be better soon.

S1: Thank you.

T: Now let' s have a revision before we begin the new lesson.

Step II. Revision

1. Revise how to grow a plant, Get the Ss to tell the process.

2. Check Wb, Ex .3. Lesson 17. Revise the use of some prepositions, especially the use of the phrase " be made of " and " be made from.”

Step III. Presentation

T: Look at the picture in your textbooks; some women are planting trees, OK? Which country are they from? Can you guess?

Ss: India.

T: Why do they plant trees, do you know?

S2: To stop the soil from being carried away down the hills. I think.

T: Good. Today we are going to read about some village people in India who are growing trees, please read the passage to find the answer to the question on top of the page:

What has changed in the past few years?

(Draw two columns on the Bb.)

Step IV. Reading

1. Give the Ss some minutes to read the passage quickly. Then collect notes on the Bb, using the Ss ' suggestions:

In the past: no trees left; people walked a long way to fetch wood; When it rained the soil was carried away; no new trees were planted.

Today: forest programme; plant thousands of trees; people are not allowed to cut down small trees; everyone looks after the forests; the forests have grown. larger and better.

2. Play the tape for the Ss to listen and follow. Tell the Ss to pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.

Step V. Intensive Reading

T: Now read the text again. After that turn to Page 78. Let' s do Ex. 1.

(Read through the questions and make sure the Ss know what to do, The Ss are required to find the answers to the questions alone, and then they can check the answers with their partners. Finally ask some pairs to tell their answers to the class.)

Suggested answers:

1. Tangsa is a village. It is in the north of India.

2. Many years ago there were no trees left in or around Tangsa, when it rained the soil was carried away down the hills and into the rivers.

3. Trees were cut down but none were planted

4. They began to understand how important the forest is. If they cut trees they must also plant new ones.

5. They wanted to cut down a large forest in the area.

6. They knew they had to save the trees, if not, they would have no wood at all.

7. The forest programme is operated by the women of the area. Twice a year, large teams of women plant thousands of trees, These small trees are given to the villagers and they are free. The village women water the trees. They also make sure the cows do not knock them down or eat the leaves.

8. People are not allowed to cut down trees when they are still small; They are only allowed to cut down trees when they are big enough.

9. Trees grow thickly on all the hills around the village

10. I think it will do good to people in Tangsa.

Step VI. Explanation

T: OK. Maybe you find some sentences in the text are difficult to understand .Now I'll explain to you the important and difficult points in the passage.

(Show them on the screen.)

1. Trees grow thickly --- = Lots of trees are growing

2. The rest are left to grow even taller. Here " the rest " means " the rest of the trees ".

e.g. Give me a glass of beer; the rest is yours

3. in or around ( set phrase ) = in the neighborhood of a place

4. People had to walk many kilometers in order to fetch wood = People had to walk many kilometers so that they could fetch wood, " so that " must be followed by a clause; " in order to " must be followed by a verb.

e.g. He stood on the chair in order to reach the top shelf. = I got up early so that I could catch the early bus.

5. forest programme: careful plans for looking after forests

6. they are free = The village people don' t have to pay for the young trees.

7. obey = do what one is told to do.

Step VII. Workbook

T: Now turn to Page 78 again. Let' s do the exercise, Ex .3. This is a summary of the text. It helps you to grasp the main idea of the story.

(Tell the Ss to read the short passage. carefully and fill in the right prepositions. If they are not sure, they are allowed to find the answers in the text. Then check the answers with the whole class.)
