Lesson 30

1. Many years ago I walked into a bookstore in Cincinnati in search of some books that I wanted. 许多年以前,我走进辛辛那提市一家书店,寻找几本我想买的书。介词词组in search of 寻找;e.g. The child came here in search of something to eat. 那个小孩到这儿来找点吃的东西。They went to the West in search of gold. 他们到西部去淘金。search 搜查;搜身;search for 寻找;e.g. They searched the thief but found nothing. 他们搜了小偷的身,但什么也没有找到。The policemen searched every part of his home. 警察搜查他家的每一个地方。They are searching for the missing boy in the forest. 他们正在森林里寻找失踪的那个男孩。search out 发现;设法找到;search after 追求;追寻;

2. …and how disappointed he looked when the man refused his request! 而当店员拒绝了他的请求时他又显得多么的失望啊!request n. / vt. 请求;要求;e.g. I did it at his request. 我是应他的要求做这件事的。All my requests were granted. 我所有的要求全部被准许了。My I request you attention? 请听我说一件事好吗?They requested a loan from the bank. 他们要求银行给他们一笔贷款。 request sb. to do sth. 请求某人干某事;I requested them not to make such a noise. 我请求他们不要这样大声喧哗。request 作动词用,宾语从句或主语从句用虚拟语气 (should + 动词原形),should可省略。e.g. The teacher requested that his students sit down. 老师请同学们坐下。It is requested that a vote be taken. 有人要求进行表决。It is requested that he leave before 7. 请求他于七点钟离开。

3. Why do you want it so badly? 你为什么这么迫切地要这本书?badly 严重地;非常;极其;= very much e.g. Our women football team was badly beaten in the match. 我们女子足球队在比赛中遭受惨败。The soldier was badly wounded in the battle last week. 那位战士在上周的战斗中受了重伤。

Besides, my father was a sailor, and I want to know about all the places he used to go to. 此外,我父亲当过水手,我想了解他过去常去的所有那些地方的情况。know about 了解……的情况;e.g. Do you know about the harm made by pollution to human beings? 你了解污染对人类的危害吗?Before learning Unit 3, I knew little about Australian aborigines. 在学习第三单元之前,我对澳大利亚土著居民了解甚少。know of 听说过;e.g. I know of it, but I didn’t know it well. 我听说过那件事,但不很清楚。

5. “Yes, it is as good as the new ones.” “是的,它和那些新书一模一样。” as good as = almost the same 几乎一样;实际上等于;e.g. He told me that everything was as good as settled. 他告诉我,实际上一切都已经解决了。What he said has as good as shown his attitude. 他的话实际上已经表明了他的态度。My mobile phone is as good as new, even though I have had it a year. 我的手机几乎还是新的,虽然我已经用了一年了。

6. Well, in that case it’ll do just well…. 要是那样的话,就买下它。in this / that case 如果这样/那样的话;e.g. He may not be back at eleven o’clock. In this case we want to leave. 他七点钟可能回不来,要是这样,我们就要走了。The professor has missed the train, in this case, the lecture has to be put off. 教授误了火车,在这种情况下,讲座只好推迟。in any case 无论如何;不管怎样; e.g. In any case I shall return in a day or two. 无论如何,我都一两天就回来。Call me in any case when you reach London. 到了伦敦后,无论如何要给我打个电话。in no case 决不;在任何情况下都不;e.g. In no case are you to leave your post. 在任何情况下都不要擅离岗位。In no case shall you break the rule. 你决不能违反规定。in case of 如果;万一;e.g. In case of fire, ring the alarm bell. 万一失火的话,请按警报器。Turn off TV set in case of thunderstorm. 在雷雨时,关上电视。in case 假使;以免;e.g. Please remember me of it again tomorrow in case I forget. 请你明天再提醒我一下,以免我忘记。In case he comes, let me know it. 假如他来了,告诉我一声。Be quiet in case you should wake the baby. 安静,免得把婴儿吵醒。Take your umbrella, in case it rains. 带上雨伞,以防天下雨。

7. At the boy’s last remark, the bookseller looked at him curiously. 听到那个男孩最后的那句话,卖书的人好奇地看着他。remark n. 评论;看法;vt. 评论;谈论;说;e.g. I’d like to hear your remark on the article. 我想听听你对这篇文章的看法。The editor remarked that the poem was beautifully written. 编辑评论说这首诗写得很好。Don’t remark on her appearance. 不要对她评头品足。

I looked into the boy’s serious but eager face and asked him: “Do you want any more books?” 我看着男孩那严肃而渴望的面孔问他:“你还要别的书吗?” look into 注视着;调查;e.g. He looked into the mirror on the wall only to find there was something on his face. 他注视着墙上的镜子结果发现他脸上有东西。The policeman looked into the robber’s eyes, hoping to find some clues. 警察盯着那个强盗的眼睛,希望找到一些线索。They set up a committee to look into the matter. 他们成立了一个委员会来调查这件事。

For one moment I thought he was going to burst into tears. 那一刻我以为他都高兴得要哭了。burst 使……爆破;涨破;e.g. He put too much air into the balloon and it burst. 他往气球里打气太多,结果气球打爆了。burst into tears 放声大哭;burst + 名词表示“突然开始某个动作” 例如:burst into laughter 哈哈大笑;burst into a laugh 扑哧一笑;burst into flames 开花; burst into leaf 长出叶子;burst into cheering 突然欢呼起来;burst into song 突然唱起歌来;burst into view 突然出现在眼前;burst into angry speech 大发雷霆。

10. Then I left him standing by the counter so happy that I almost envied him. envy vt. / n. 羡慕;嫉妒;envy sb. 羡慕某人;envy sth. 羡慕某事;envy sb. (for) sth. 羡慕某人某事;the envy of 令……羡慕/嫉妒的人/事; e.g. They envied us for our success. 他们羡慕我们的成功。I envied you for your good fortune. 我羡慕你的好运气。Her many talents were the envy of all her friends. 她多才多艺,所有的朋友都羡慕她。
