Lesson 29

1. We fixed it. 我们确定过呀。 fix vt.安排;确定;e.g. Everything had been fixed in advance. 一切事前都已经安排好了。Come tonight and I’ll fix things for you. 今晚来吧,一切由我来安排。They have fixed the date for the meeting. 他们已确定了会议的日期。fix up 把……安顿好;fix one’s attention on 集中注意力于;fix one’s eyes on / upon 全神贯注地注视;We will be fixed up for dinner / for night in Kuitie Hotel. 我们将被安排在奎铁大酒店就餐/入住。Please fix your attention on what the teacher is saying. 请注意老师讲的内容。All the eyes in the class are fixed on the teacher. 全班所有的目光全盯着老师。She fixed her affections on her only child. 她将她的感情倾注在她的独子身上。

We thought we might go out, but we said we’d check with each other first. 我们当时想可能出去,但是我们也说过应事先联系好。check 检查;核对;抑制;阻挡;check with 和……联系;和……核对; check out 结帐离开;check in /at (旅馆/飞机等)登记;check up 调查;e.g. The teacher checked the students’ papers over. 老师仔细查看了学生们的试卷。They have checked the enemy’s advance. 他们已经挡住了敌人攻势。He checked in at the hotel last night. 他昨天晚上住进了那家旅馆。Passengers must check in at the airport an hour before the plane leaves. 旅客们必须在飞机起飞前一小时到机场办理登机手续。When did you check out the hotel? 你是什么时候结帐离开旅馆的?He checked his answers with those in the back of the book. 他把自己做的答案与书后面的答案核对了一下。

3. I can’t manage this Friday. 这个星期五不行。manage 对待;处理;办理;e.g. I can manage by myself. 我自己对付得了。He won’t be able to manage without help. 没有别人的帮助,他是办不成的。I doubt whether the young engineer can manage the situation. 我拿不准那位年轻的工程师能否对付得了这种形势。

4. You don’t keep your word. 你不守信用。keep one’s word / promise 信守诺言; e.g. The Chinese people always keep their word. 中国人民说话是算数的。You can trust him. He always keeps his word. 你可以相信他。他一贯信守诺言。

5. I don’t want to argue about it with you. 我不想因为此事和你争辩。argue with sb. about / over sth. 和某人争辩某事;argue sth. out 把某事争辩清楚;e.g. I’ll have to argue this out with you. 我得把这事和你争辩清楚。

6. Anyhow, I’ll see you next week. 不管怎么说,下周我来看望你。anyhow不管怎样;无论如何;然而;e.g. Anyhow I don’t like this book. 不管怎么样我都不喜欢这本书。Anyhow I’ll have to finish this work today. 无论如何我今天都要完成这项工作。It may rain, but anyhow I shall go to school. 天可能要下雨,但是无论如何我都得去学校。

7. I’m sorry about that argument. I apologize for being so rude. 对于那次争论我很抱歉。很抱歉我那么无理。I’m sorry about / for sth.; I’m sorry for doing sth.;

I’m sorry to do sth./ to have done sth.; ( I’m sorry to do sth. 在将要或正在打扰某人时说;I’m sorry to trouble you. 对不起,我要打扰您了。I’m sorry to have troubled you so long. 对不起,打扰了您这么长的时间。

8. I didn’t mean to be so rude. 我并不是有意那么粗鲁的。 mean to do sth. 有意做某事;mean doing sth. 意味着做某事;e.g. What do you mean to do with it? 你打算怎样处理它?I didn’t mean to hurt you. I had meant to help you. 我不是想伤害你,我是想帮帮你呀。I don’t mean to say that we are perfect. 我不想说我们十全十美。Missing the bus means waiting for one more hour. 错过了这班车就意味着再等一个小时。

9. I feel rather ashamed. 我觉得很过意不去。feel ashamed for / of / at sth. 因……而感到惭愧;e.g. I’m ashamed at / for having done such a thing. 我因为做了这样的事情而感到羞愧。feel ashamed for sb. = be ashamed of sb. 替某人感到害臊;I’m much ashamed of him. 我很替他害臊。

10. There is no need. 没有必要。There is no / much / little / some / any need for sb. to do sth. e.g. In the study of English, there is much need for useful reading materials, but there is no need to buy expensive books which are difficult to understand. 在英语学习中,有用的阅读材料是很有必要的,但是完全没有必要去买那些价格昂贵而又难懂的书籍。Now I think that there is no need for me to be so hard on my students. 现在我觉得我完全没有必要对学生如此苛刻。
