I. TEACHING AIMS AND DEMANDS
1. After teaching this unit, get the students to master the adjectives which appear in the unit. The students can use them correctly in both spoken and written English.
2. Get the students to learn the useful expressions of offering help, and they can use them to make up their own dialogues.

Step 1: Revision
T: Nice to see you again, everyone.
Ss: Nice to see you again.
T: Hello, Zhang Li. How are you?
Z: Fine, thank you. And you?
T: I’m fine, too. (Repeat with other students.)
T: Who’s on duty today?
S1: I am.
T: Are you on duty today?
S1: Yes.
T: Are we all here today?
S1: Yes, we are .
T: Is Wang Min here today?
S1: Yes.
T: Where is he?
S1: Wang Min is here.
T: Is Liu Lu here today?
S1: Yes.
T: Where is Liu Lu?
S1: She is over there.
T: Thank you very much. Sit down, please.
Step 2 Presentation
T: Open your books at page 65. And look at part one, listen to me. (Read this dialogue.) Now please read together. (Students read)
T: Who’d like to be the teacher?
S2: I’d like to.
T: Who’d like to be Li Lei?
S3: I am.
T: S2 come to the blackboard and practise with S3. (S2 and S3 practise the dialogue without looking at the books.)
(Repeat)
T: (Draw a calendar on the blackboard)
This is a calendar.
Do you know what day is it today?
Ss: It is Tuesday.
T: Yes. Would you please practise the dialogue in pairs?
Step 3 Practice
T: (Ask some pairs to act it out, and them together) Now Let’s practise together, this part play the role of teacher, that one play the role of student.
Part 1: Good morning, class. Please sit down.
Today is Tuesday. Who’s on duty today?
Part 2: I am.
Part 1: Are we all here today?
Part 2: Yes, we are all here today.
Step 4 Presentation
T: (Take out a box and point to it.)

Ss: No, it isn’t
T: What colour is it?
Ss: White.
T: Is it new?
Ss: No, it’s old.
T: Is it small? (Use gestures)
Ss: No.
T: It’s big. (Use gestures)
Read after me, everyone. Small, a small box.
Ss: Small, a small box.
T: Big, a big box.
Ss: Big, a big box.
T: What’s this?
Ss: It’s a big box.
(Repeat with heavy / light, empty / full)
T: (Hold two bottles.) This bottle is full. This one is empty. Do you understand?
Ss: Yes.
T: Here one refers to bottle. (Explain in Chinese.)
Step 5 Read and learn
T: Close your books, please! And listen to the tape.
(Play the tape. Students listen and repeat.)
Is this bag light? Who can answer this question?
S4: No, it’s heavy. (Help if necessary.)
(Repeat with other questions. Get students to talk about classroom objects.)
T: Now open your books. Let’s listen again and then read together.
(Ss listen and repeat.)
Step 6 Practice
T: Turn to your workbooks. Let’s do exercise one first. Please make up your own dialogues and write one of them in your exercise books.
T: Now please do Ex.2 in pairs. (Then get them to talk about classroom objects.)
Step 7 Homework
T: Review the whole lesson after class and try to finish Ex.3. Write one of the dialogues in Ex.1 in the exercise book.

(Repeat asking for pencil. Eraser. Etc.)

T: Right, very good. “Could you help me, please?” is a polite way of asking for help.

(Practise putting objects in the box, closing the door, etc.)
Step 4 Read and say
T: Open your books, Look at part 1, and listen to the tape.
Ss: (Listen and repeat.)
T: Please practise in pairs and then act.
(Then ask a few pairs to act it out.)
Step 5 Read and say
T: Look at Part 2. Listen to this part and then repeat.
Ss: (Listen and repeat)
T: (Divide the class into two halves, and get them practise together.)
(After reading, write “carry, I want to take some books to the classroom” on the Bb.)
T: Guess their meanings. (Then explain)
Now please practise in pairs. (Get some students to act it out.)
Step 6 Revision
T: (Show the slides.) Who can talk about these pictures?
(Ask two students to talk, and go on practising with another two pairs.)
Step 7 Listen and answer
T: Please turn to your workbooks and look at the questions in Ex.1 first, and then listen to the tape.
(Students listen and do the exercises, then check.)
Step 8 Workbook
T: Let’s do Ex.2 first orally, and write the answers after class.
Step 9 Homework
T: Finish off Ex.3 in your workbooks and write the answers in Ex.2 in your exercise books.

Step 1 Revision
T: Say the opposites of these words, big.
Ss: Small.
T: Heavy.
Ss: Light.
T: Full.
Ss: Empty.
T: Old.
Ss: New.
T: Can you spell heavy?
Ss: Yes, h-e-a-v-y, heavy.
T: Could you help me, please? I want to open the door.
S1: Certainly!
T: Thanks.
S1: You’re welcome.
(Go on practising, ask them to carry books, putting things over there, etc. Get a few pairs of students to ask and answer.)
Step 2 Presentation
T: (Draw a bag, a box and a bottle on the Bb.)
(Point to them) What are they?
Ss: They’re a bag, a box and a bottle.
T: Right. They’re things. (Write “thing” on the Bb.)
I want to put these things over there. Could you help me, please?
S2: Certainly.
T: Now please make up a dialogue in pairs, using “ I want to… could you …?”
(Students practise and then act it out.)
Step 3 Read and say
T: Don’t look at your books and listen to the tape.
Ss: (Listen and repeat.)
T: Open your books, look at the dialogue, and read together.
Ss: (Read together the dialogue.)
T: Read after me. Could you help me, please?
Step 4 Read and say
T: Please look at Part 2, read silently.
Ss: (Read silently.)
T: (Write “This bag is too big.” on the Bb.)

T: What does “too” mean? ( “too” 这个单词什么意思呢?)
S3: 太,非常。
T: Right. Listen to me. The desk is too heavy. I can’t move it. Do you understand?
Ss: 桌子太重了,我搬不动。
T: Could you make some sentences?
S4: This coat is too small. I can’t put it on.
T: (Draw a basket on the Bb) This is a basket.
S5: This basket is too heavy. I can’t carry it.
T: Very good. Listen to the tape. Practise in a group of threes and then act out the dialogue.

Step 5 Presentation
T: (Show them a red pencil.) Here’s a red pencil.
(Show a blue pencil to them) Here’s a blue one.
(Show them a yellow chalk) Talk about it.
Ss: Here’s a yellow chalk.
T: (Show them a green one.) Go on.
Ss: Here’s a green one.
(Repeat practising with other objects.)
T: Good.
Step 6 Read and say
T: Books closed! Listen to the tape.
Ss: (Listen)
T: Is the bottle full?
Ss: No, it’s empty.
T: Right. Books open! And listen again.
Ss: (Listen)
T: What does “give me a bottle of orange” mean?
Ss: (No answer)
T: Here “Orange” means orange juice. 桔汁.
So this sentence means 给我一瓶桔汁。
Now let’s read the dialogue together.
Ss: Read the dialogue.
(Call out several pairs of students to read the dialogue aloud.)
