Teaching Objectives

1. Reading skills and strategies

(1) Scan for the key information (the formation and development of a normal band and the Monkees) by spotting the verbal phrases and transitional words.

(2) Explore the implied meaning of the passage (the power of music can change people)

2. Words, expressions and cultural information

(1) Master the words and phrases related to the formation and development of a band through reading (Musician, instrument, performance, dream of, pretend, to be honest, attach…to, form, earn, studio, millionaire, play jokes on, rely on, get familiar with, or so, break up.)

(2) Learn about what a band is and describe the formation and development of a band.

3. Significance of learning

Be aware of the important factors to success such as the full love of music, the hard working, the passion to the career, the team spirit etc.

Important and difficult points:

Sum up the differences and similarities between an ordinary band and the Monkees.

Teaching procedure

Stage1 lead-in (5mins)

Step1: T asks Ss to look at the pictures of the band “the Beatles”(Ss knew the Beatles before ) and“the Monkees”, then T introduces the reading passage to Ss: it is about a band which was even more popular than the Beatles in 1960s.

Step2: T asks Ss read the title of the passage “The Band That Wasn’t ” and guess the meaning of the title.

Step3: T guides Ss to scan the third paragraph to clarify their understanding about title.

Step4: T asks Ss read the first paragraph and conclude the main idea: Many people want to be famous as singers or musicians. Let Ss pay attention to the different of “singer” “musician” and “band”. Then T explain some new words: dream of, pretend, to be honest, attach...to, form

Stage 2 Main idea(5mins)

Step 1:T asks Ss to read paragraph 2 and guides them find out the topic sentence (Many musicians meet and form a band because they like to write and play their own music. ) and summary the main idea of this paragraph. (How a usual band formed.)

Step 2: Ss read paragraph 3 silently and T guides Ss find the topic sentence(However, there was one band that started in a different way) and main idea(The development of Monkees is different from a usual band).

Step 3: Ss skim paragraph 4, T guides Ss to summary the main idea of this paragraph(The development of Monkees and the reason why they succeed is their true love of music. )

Stage3

step1: T guids Ss to read pragraph2 in silence.

step2: Complete a chart of how a band is formed.

step3: Check the answer and summaris this the formal band formed.And ask wheather the Monkees formed in the same way.

Stage 4: The formation of Monkees (4mins)

Step 1: T leads Ss to know the main idea of paragraph three.

Step 2: T lets Ss fill the table

Step3:T checks and corrects the answers

Stage 5 Understanding of paragraph 4 (6mins)

Step1: T guides Ss scan the 4th paragraph and fill in the blanks in the following sentences.

Development: At first some of these actors had to rely on other musician to help them, though they just pretend to sing during the broadcast, their performances were attractive and popular. A year or so, they became more serious about their work and started to play and sing their own songs. They became more popular and sold more records than the Beatles.

Step2: After reading, ask some students to reported their answers.

Stage 6 Structure of the passage (4mins)

Step 1: T guides Ss discuss how Monkees became a real band.

Step 2: Ss talk about the important factors to success such as the full love of music, the hard working, the passion to the career, the team spirit etc.

Step 3: T guides Ss divide the passage into 3 parts, make it clear about the structure of this passage.

Stage 7 Understand and Summary

Step 1: T selects one or two Ss to tell the process how the Monkees became famous.

Step 2: T guides Ss to summarize their understanding of “band”, “musician”.

Step 3: T guides Ss to image Ss to form their own band(four Ss a group)
