Lesson 1

Step 1 Greeting

Step 2 Warming-up

Today we’re going to learn unit 1,Good friends. I think every student must have many friends, some of them are close ones. Who would like to tell me sth. about your friends? What’s his/her name? Is he/she good-looking /hard-working /humorous/ warm-hearted? Why do you want to make friends with him/her?

One boy told me that he has many friends because he has much money. He can usually go to Kentucky, go to watch a movie with his friends. Will you make friends with a person only because he’s rich? Do you have many friends? Why do you think you are so popular with your friends? Can you use some adjectives to describe yourself? (at least 3 words)

Look at part1, warming up. Look at the box first. Is there any new word that you don’t know? Can you explain them to me in English?

Now I want you to discuss two questions:

1. what should a good friend be like?

2. what qualities should a good friend have?

(eg. This computer is of high quality. I’ve used it for 5 years and it never breaks down. That one is of poor quality, it often doesn’t work. I have mended it for many times.)

Notes:

What … be like?询问对人或事的评价、感受,也可描述长相、性格气质。

Eg. What’s the film/ book like? Wonderful.

What’s your new friend like? She’s slim and very friendly to others.

Beautiful/ handsome/ good-looking/ pretty

Fun/ funny fun(n.) funny(adj.)

Eg. They’re having a lot of fun. He’s full of fun.很风趣

They do this just for fun.

There’s something funny about this matter. 古怪

A good friend is someone who … (attributive clause)

Eg. He’s the only one in our class who can get full mark in this exam.

Describe(v.) / description(n.)

Eg. Can you describe what happened in the accident?

She’s beautiful beyond description.

Step 3 Listening

Now we’re going to listen to two friends arguing. You have to listen carefully and write down what you hear. What are they arguing about? What do you think they should do to solve the problems? I’ll check the answer later. (Play the tape for the students to listen)

- argue with sb. about/ over sth. / argue sb. into doing sth. argument(n.)

eg. He argued with the policeman about the fine.

His wife argued him into buying a new house.

- solve the problem solution (n.)

Step 4 Speaking

Now I would like to know sth. about your favorite hobbies. What’s your hobby?

We know different people has different hobbies. Let’s read about the following 7 people who talks about their hobbies. What do John like to do? I’ll ask some students to read out…. When you’re listening to your classmate’s reading, try to underline some words that you don’t know and some phrases you think important. Then fill in the form and try to find out what they like and don’t like.

- enjoy doing sth. / like/love doing sth.

- nor/so + be/ do/ modal verb + pron.

Eg. His house isn’t big, nor is mine. She doesn’t like swimming, nor do I.

She loves/is fond of reading, so do/am I .

- Be into sth. = be interested in (doing) sth. Be fond of (doing) sth.

- Surf the internet

- Make a list of = list(v) gender=sex

Step 5 Workbook (Homework)

Wb Exx. TALKING on page 85-86. work with your partner and write down the dialogue on your exercise book, I’ll check tomorrow. And you’ll have a dictation in next class. Pls be ready and I hope you can get a high mark tomorrow.

Lesson 2

Step 1 Revision

1. Can you remember all the new words in this unit? Let’s have a short dictation.

Check the spelling of some words, quality, describe/description, argue/argument, decide/decision, novel, especially, surf,

2. Check the homework exercise. Ask some students to act out the dialogue they wrote down yesterday.

3. Revise the SPEAKING, listen to the tape, pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation. Talk about the likes and dislikes.

Step 2 Pre-reading

We all know that we have lived with our parents since we were born. We have never been left on a place without our parents, brother or sister, friends and all the things we need in our daily life. Right? Imagine that you were alone on a deserted island. What do you need to survive? Work in groups. Try to describe the usefulness of each item in the box and decide on the three most useful things. Use the expression: I think… because…/ I could use it to …/ it could be used to… / …would be more important than… because…

Talk about how they would fee in an extreme situation. How would you feel if you were alone on a deserted island?(angry, desperate, lonely, hungry, worried, hopeful, happy, afraid, etc.) what would you do to try to overcome these feelings?

Step 3 Reading

Let the Ss read the passage and find out the answer to the questions on Post-reading. Eg. 1.What’s Chuck’s job? 2. what happened to him one day? 3.How can a volleyball become Chuck’s friend? 4.What does Chuck learn about himself when he’s alone on the island?

Give the students a few minutes to make a list of words and expressions from the text that you want to learn.

Language points:

- deserted (past participle as adj.) the place where no people can live a ~house

- survive =go on living survivor, survival (n.)

- hunt for= look for

eg. They hunted high and low for the book.

Those young men are busy hunting for jobs.

- make fire, make bed, make tea

- in order to… eg. He studies hard in order to get a high mark.

- realize (v) real (adj) really realization (n)

- treat… as… eg. Her mother still treats her as a baby.

- care about / care for=like; take care of

eg. She thinks only of herself. She doesn’t care about other people.

I don’t care for football/ pop music. The children are well cared for in the nurseries.

- learn from

eg. You must learn from your mistake. We learned the truth from him.

Step 4 Listening and consolidation

Listen to the tape. You can follow it in a low voice. Pay attention to your pronunciation and intonation. If time permits, discuss the last two questions.

Step 5 Summary and Homework

We’ve learnt a lot from this lesson. We know that friendship can help us understand what kind of people we are, why we need each other and what we can do for each other. At the same time, we also learnt some useful phrases from it.

1. Recite the last paragraph of the text. 2. Review the new phrases you’ve learned in this unit. 3. Preview the next part “word study and grammar”

Lesson 3

Step 1 Revision

Step 2 Word study

In the previous class, we’ve learnt some adjectives to talk about the qualities of a friend, and some other useful phrases and expressions. Turn to page 4 and fill in the blanks with the words and phrases in this unit. Then check the answer.

Step 3 Grammar study

Please translate the following sentences into English. 我喜欢看冒险故事。玛利,你看见我的笔记本了吗?ask two students to tell me the answer.

…said, “ I like reading adventure stories.”

…asked, “ Mary, have you seen my notebook?”

if we report what they said to someone else, how to do it?

We should pay attention the the change of tenses.

In the second sentence, in direct speech, it’s a general question, but in indirect speech, we should use if or whether to introduce object clause besides the change of verb. If it’s a special question in direct speech, we should use the original interrogative in indirect speech. Look at the fourth sentence in the box.

What else we should pay attention to when we make this change? The pronoun, the time, … is that clear? Let’s do some exercises. Finish part 1 by yourself and then discuss it in pairs. Then check the answer.

In fact, we should pay attention to some special cases. In the interchanges of direct and indirect speech, it’s not necessary for us to change “here, come, yesterday and so on” into “there, go, the day before” if we are at that given time and place. And if the content in direct speech is objective truth, it’s also not necessary to change the tense. For example, she said it is well-known that the earth moves round the sun.

Part 2 now you’re given five minutes to do it, first by yourself, then discuss with your partner. Pay attention, you have to guess what Wilson says according to the context, then write down what Wilson says, using direct speech.

(check the answer of workbook P87)

Step 4 Test

Complete the sentences using the phrases we met in this unit.

1. They’re always (为…而争吵)money.

2. She’s laughing (一直) just now.

3. Boys (喜欢) football.

4. The boy (上网 ) as soon as he is free.

5. He brought some coal (来生火).

6. If you were alone on a deserted island, you would have to (搜索) water and food.

7. He was lucky enough to (飞机失事后仍活着 ).

8. When he was in the countryside, he (交上了朋友) with the peasants there.

9. The police his death (把…看作) a case of murder.

10. There were 30 passengers (在飞机上) when the plane was crashing.

11. We started early (为了) arrive before dark.

12. She didn’t (在乎) anything people might say.

Step 5 Workbook Wb Exx. 1, 2 and 3

Lesson 4

Step 1 Revision

1. Check the homework exercise 2. Revise the content of last lesson

Step 2 Pre-reading

As we all know, everyone has friends, even more than one. Someone else can be our friend, and even some other animal or thing can be our friend, as we know from Chuck’s friend.

- have fun = enjoy oneself

- drop sb. a line eg. Don’t forget to drop me a line when you are on your vacation.

Step 3 Reading

Look at reading and writing. Now you’re given four minutes to read the three passages. Then answer some questions. What’s an e-pal? (Someone you write emails to) what good points has an e-mail?(faster and cheaper) what’s Jane’s/ Jack’s hobbies?

Step 4 Writing (Homework)

Write an e-mail to your friend on your writing book. Pay attention, it’s informal, but try to keep in your mind that you should write the topic of your mail on the subject line. Don’t forget to write your name at the end of your mail.

Finish the workbook exercises. Get ready for the unit competition.
