1894年6月23日，国际奥委会 在巴黎正式成立，为了纪念这一具有历史意义的经过国际奥林匹克委员会的赞同，把这一日称为“奥林匹克日”或运动日。国际奥委会从1948年起将每年的6月23日定为国际奥林匹克日。当年6月23日举行了首次奥林匹克日活动，参加的国家有葡萄牙、希腊、奥地利、加拿大、瑞士、英国、乌拉圭、委内瑞拉和比利时。此后, 在每年的6月17日至24日之间, 各个国家或地区奥委会都要组织各种庆祝活动。现在世界上参加此项活动的国家、地区已由首届的9个增至100多个，参加者十分踊跃，表达了人们对奥林匹克精神的崇尚! 经过国际奥林匹克委员会的赞同，把这一日称为“奥林匹克日”或“运动日”。
